Jizan covers an area of 40,000 square kilometers, including some 5,000 villages and cities. The city of Jizan is situated on the Red Sea coast. Attached to it are 100 islands, including the important island of Farasan.

There are about 80 or so islands in the Farasan group, with the main island having the name, Farasan Island The main city on Farasan Island is also called Farasan. There is probably as much reef in the Farasan Islands as there is along the entire coastline of Saudi Arabia.

	This is the ruins of an old German-built Fort used during World War II on a small island near the main Farasan Island, shown here in June 2000.
