Bordering the Arabian gulf and containing the towns of Dhahran, Al-Khobar, Dammam, Hofuf and Jubail, the eastern province is where oil was first discovered in Saudi Arabia in the 1930s. Before the discovery of oil, Dammam and Al-Khobar were tiny fishing and pear ling villages, there was no Dhahran at all.

Dhahran Wildlife Haven: A man-made oasis environment which now supports a remarkable range of fauna and flora. A closer look at this wildlife haven illustrates some ecological successes of recent decades, highlighted by the first successful breeding of Great Crested Grebes within Arabia.
Remarkable greening of the residential community has dramatically
enhanced the area's potential for migrant, wintering and even breeding birds. Irrigation and planting of exotic trees and shrubs has
transformed the community area into a superb parkland habitat attractive to many birds.

Causeway linking Saudi Arabia to Bahrain The most spectacular road construction project of all has been the building of the Bahrain Causeway, connecting the Saudi Arabian mainland with the island of Bahrain. Building works, financed entirely by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, were completed in 1986 and the Causeway was opened to traffic at the end of that year. |
|
Note: At the middle of the causeway (bridge) is an island that is used as the customs inspections point for Saudi. In the large bathroom at the rest stop is a sign from the Saudi customs authority stating, anything left in this bathroom will not be questioned but a person will be charged for anything contraband that is found in their possession during inspection!

Al-Hasa
lies in the south of the Kingdom's Eastern region and is bounded
by the Al-Dahna and the Al-Daman deserts. It enjoys the benefit of copious reserves of underground water which has allowed the area to develop its agricultural potential. http://www.saudia-online.com/travel/Major%20Cities%20of%20the%20Kingdom_files/alhasa.htm |
