A Canadian Woman's perspective on Saudi Arabia: Shopping in KSA FEB.2000: Many of the compounds have their own bus for the women and a monthly schedule for daily excursions to the shopping areas of the city. This afternoon is to the shopping center downtown called Euromarche. It has grocery and clothing and other types of stores. A huge mall similar to the ones in North America. http://members.tripod.com/~Bob_Savage/pp3.htm |
Women speaking to
strange men...
Its not that a woman can NOT talk to a strange man but
HOW she talks to him. A woman will meet many men, a simple example is while
shopping. She is expected to be very conservative while addressing a man, in no
way flirting or giving the impression that a man can relax his respect to her.

HENNA is used as both a hair treatment as well as a dye to make decorative designs on the skin and also used on the hair. www.bdancer.com/med-guide/toc.html |

Kohl (eyeliner or mascara) is ground up antimony sulfide, a mineral compound, mixed with a fine oil, like olive oil. It gives a dark line and had been used long before the time of Cleopatra. Eye shadow has been found in ancient Egyptian burial sites that go back 10,000 years! It was used by both men and women on the desert to control the sun's glare. www.bdancer.com/med-guide/suppl/makeup.html Tell me that this is not sexy!!! |

My note: all newborn babies immediately have kohl put on their eyes, "to make sure that their eyes become beautiful". When a baby gets an eye infection it's counted up to a bad brand of kohl, not, having sulfide put into their eyes!!

Jodi Cobb: I think the most difficult assignment that I had was the Women of Saudi Arabia. It was a story that had never been photographed before. www.kodak.com/US/en/corp/magazine/transcripts/2-08-2001.1-1.shtml |

Rouge (zerkoun), a fine red powder prepared from safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) was used to paint ladies' cheeks in traditional Arabia. It was also applied to the lips. The Bedouin of Arabia are known to have used the red roots of the Arnebia decumbens (a plant of the Boragnaceae family) to make rouge. www.bdancer.com/med-guide/toc.html

Saudi women to train for civil defence. Senior civil defence officer Major Fahd Al-Nafei was quoted as saying that thousands of female teachers would be trained in first aid, fire extinguishers, evacuation of females from schools and other sites. The move follows an incident earlier this year, when 15 school girls were crushed to death in a stampede after a fire broke out in their school. picture: Mecca city govenor visits the fire-damaged girls school. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/1961905.stm |

When a Saudi women appears in public, she normally wears a voluminous black cloak called an abayah, a scarf covering her hair and a full face veil. Women's fashions do not stop with the abayah though if you are a male, that is all you are likely to see. Beneath the black cloak, Saudi women enjoy fashionable clothing and take great pride in their appearance. |
|
The face veil can also be a 'burgah', this allows women to 'see' normally, another hair cover is worn on top of this. Also wearing the face veil is optional, depending on how the male members of the family want their women to cover.

Saudi women defy business curbs. Women in Saudi Arabia are making a growing impact on the economy. About 10% of private businesses in the kingdom are now thought to be run by women, compared with hardly any a generation ago. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/1128951.stm |

Saudi women are encouraged to play an important part in the workforce in such occupations as doctors, dentists, teachers and TV presenters. The government is working hard to encourage progress in this area whilst still retaining traditional values. |

Ear piercing and Nose piercing In Arabia a baby girl usually has her ears pierced at birth, and a Bedouin child may have them pierced in two or three places. The holes are kept open with silk cords until she is old enough to wear ear-rings. There are even some pieces of jewelry which attach to the nose, and then attach to other head ornaments. www.bdancer.com/med-guide/toc.html

At top right: Traditional women's clothes (also called, tobe) are decorated with tribal motifs, coins, sequins, metallic thread and appliques. www.lonelyplanet.com/destinations/middle_east/saudi_arabia/culture.htm Bottom Right: Another 'fancy' tobe, again most likely with real gold thread. http://personal.inet.fi/yritys/letsdance/oriental.html |
