Hunting & Sports
.
Hunting used to be a very popular sport here until they had hunted several animals to extinction. The Ibex and other animals were brought over from the San Diego Zoo and are now preserved in several wildlife habitats here in Saudi. www.baynardscastle.com/adventures/almuwayh.html

As part of its commitment to develop the nation's human resources, Saudi Arabia has placed special emphasis on encouraging and making sports accessible to all as a healthy leisure-time activity. Saudis now enjoy a network of hundreds of parks, campsites, picnic grounds and other facilities where families can relax and enjoy nature. www.saudiembassy.org.uk/profile-of-saudia-arabia/sports-and-recreation/introduction.htm |

Hunting with falcons is a cherished tradition in Saudi Arabia that dates back centuries. Saad, a practitioner of the sport, takes us to a store that specializes in it. Inside, paraphernalia of all sorts to accommodate the bird and the hunt is available for sale. Rifles, bags, stands, leather coveralls, leather bird head covers, tether loops, bird stands that look like giant carpeted thumb tacks, belts that hold bullets — you name it, they have it. Saad says falcons are not difficult to train and that trainers return the birds to the wild after each season. www.saudiembassy.net/publications/Magazine-Winter-01/wonders.htm

To say that the Saudi's are Soccer crazy is an understatement, every empty lot will have a 'playing field' and as soon as the afternoon prayers are over the field is full of enthusiastic players. Even during Ramadan and while fasting these young men will play!! |
