Large Scale Mechanization The encouragement of
large-scale mechanized agriculture was identified in the Third Plan as a
priority for investment in the Kingdom's efforts to induce structural change
in the economy. The
positive investment response from the private sector to a high level of
government support exceeded even the high expectations of the Plan.

Date palms line Madinah's streets and highways in profusion. It is almost impossible to find a park or garden in the city without at least one palm tree. The date palm has provided mankind with food and building materials since the dawn of time and can be found from the Canary Islands across northern Africa to the Middle East; from India and Pakistan to south-west Asia. A phenomenal growth in the production of all basic foods from 1.79
million tons in 1970 to 2.39 million tons in 1981 and 7 million tons in
1992. Saudi agricultural production was valued at 5 06 billion U.S.
dollars in the same year. The increased food production brought about a
proportional decline in imports. |

The Al-Safi dairy in Saudi Arabia is the
largest commercial dairy in the world. If farming is difficult to picture in the desert, a booming dairy farm challenges the imagination even more. Yet more than 29,000 head of cattle are raised at Al-Safi farm in Saudi Arabia. The Al-Safi farm comprises 14 square miles in the Al Sahba Valley, some 60 miles southeast of Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia. |

"Al-Safi dairy is not only the largest integrated farm in the
world, but rather a living monument to the triumph of human vision,
spirit and willingness to accept challenges," reported CNN’s World Report in

To put the size of the agriculture sector in perspective, only 0.8% of the whole
surface area of Saudi Arabia is farmed.
-Dairy farming: Herds are huge and some farms are among the largest in the world
with world class performance.
-Poultry is one of the main livestock growth areas.
-Traditional sheep, goat and camel producers that have also increased
considerably.
